IRRIGATION INFRASTRUCTURE

The NCFD has more than 300 reservoirs, most of which are intended for seasonal or day storage. River regulation is primarily used for irrigation of farm land and fish farming.

The river regulation is wider used in the Stavropol Krai that has about 100 reservoirs in use with total useful capacity of 2.15 km3.

Many off-stream reservoirs for streamflow redistribution are located on the channels, including:

  • Sengeley reservoir operating on the Kuban River flowing along the Nevinomyssk channel
  • Kuban reservoir located on the Big Stavropol channel that diverts the Kuban River stream to waterless regions of the Caspian Sea basin
  • Egorlyk reservoir operating partially on the Kuban River stream and regulating the Egorlyk River runoff
  • Chograi reservoir located on the border of the Republic of Kalmykia and Stavropol Krai and is designed for water storage, irrigation, flooding, potable water supply and fish farming. Over the period of reservoir operation, water quality deterioration has been observed due to adverse hydrological regime causing persistent water salinity growth

The remaining reservoirs are shallower and are designed for irrigation, water supply, fish farming and power generation.

The Big Stavropol channel is a multipurpose channel. It intakes water from the Kuban River and supplies water to four hydroelectric power plants and a cluster of Caucasian towns of mineral springs.

The Nevinnomysk channel that intakes water from the Kuban River and Tersko-Kum channel fed by the Terek River also operate in the Stavropol Krai.

The Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, Chechen Republic and Republic of Ingushetia are situated in the upper and middle reach of the Terek River. The stream is slightly regulated here – the useful capacity of reservoirs is 12 mil. m3. Reservoirs are generally small and designed for irrigation of lands.
