Geographic area and nature and climatic conditions
Ingushetia is located in the central part of the northern slope of the Greater Caucasus and the Chechen Plain. It is delimited by the Great Caucasus on the south, the Tersky Range on the north, and is crossed by the Sunzha river. The republic possesses a wide variety of landscapes, from flat plains to mountain ranges. Some mountains in the south part are over 3,000 m high, for example the Shan mountain is 4,451 high. Mountain ranges are highly dissected by canyons and gullies.
The north-south extent of the republic is 120 km, and the east-west extent is 50 km.
ГIngushetia shares borders with the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, the Chechen Republic, the Stavropol Krai, and with Georgia.
Major rivers: Terek, Assa, Sunzha, Armkhi.
Climate is temperate continental. Average temperature is -3°С to -12°С in January and 21°С to 30°С in July. Average annual precipitation is from 300 to 1,200 mm.
Flora: broadleaf woods, including oaks, hazels, ash trees, beeches, maples, and buckthorns.
Soils: chestnut, chernozem, meadow and swampy meadow, sandy, alluvial, mountain forest, and mountain meadow.
Founded in 1992 as the Ingush Republic, it was renamed as the Republic of Ingushetia in 1996. Its administrative capital is Matas city. As of January 1, 2012, the area of the republic is 3,600 square kilometers which is 0.02% of the area of the Russian Federation.
As of January 1, 2012, estimated population of the republic is 430.5 thousand people, or 0.30% of the Russian population. Population density is 118.47 persons per square kilometer. The share of urban population is 39.21%.

Ingushetia produces oil and free and dissolved gas. There are 7 geologically proven oil and gas-and-oil fields. Oil produced in Ingushetia is famous for its high quality.
The republic counts 32 non-metallic mineral reserves.
The diverse lithology of sedimentary formations enabled developing the mineral resource base of construction raw materials. Currently, 43 reserves of construction raw materials are developed. The Furtougsky and Alkunsky fields are recorded on the public balance sheet.
