AGRICULTURAL SECTOR
The area of agricultural lands is 222.2 thousand ha including 112.2 thousand ha of plough lands, 2.5 thousand ha of perennial plantings, 9.6 thousand ha of hayfields, and 97.9 thousand ha of grasslands.
The most common soils are chernozem in the steppe zone of the north part of the republic, medium thick chernozem in the forest-steppe zone of the south part of the republic, and mountain meadow soils in the mountain meadow zone.
Crop producers specialize in cereals, including wheat, oat, and barley, sugar beet, sunflowers, feed crops, fruits, and vegetables. Animal farming is represented by beef and dairy products, sheep and goat breeding. Tobacco production is also well-developed.
